Welcome to Kilmessan National School's website

Fáilte ar-ais /Welcome back

September 3rd 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We would like to extend a particularly warm “Welcome Back” to all of our students returning after such a lengthy closure. A special Céad Míle Fáilte to our new Junior Infants and to all other children attending our school for the first time.

We are all delighted to be back at school & we’d like to thank the entire school community for co-operating with the new Covid-19 arrangements. Our over-riding concern is for the safety & wellbeing of all pupils in our school.

Below are some pointers/reminders which you may find helpful in making the transition back to school as smooth as possible.

  • Please check the school website regularly for updates www.kilmessanns.com

  • Each teacher is contactable via their respective class email address. Please ensure that all contact details are up to date-especially mobile phone numbers & email addresses, as these will be used more than ever this year.

  • School Uniform must be worn every day-except for P.E. days when the school tracksuit should be worn. Shorts, if worn, must be the same colour as the uniform or tracksuit being worn on that day (dark grey/navy).

  • Please ensure that all your child’s clothing & belongings are clearly labelled with his/her name, using indelible ink. Unclaimed or unidentified items will be disposed of regularly, as we cannot operate a Lost & Found facility this year.

  • Children should bring a healthy lunch and drinks to school every day. One small treat is permitted on Fridays in accordance with our Healthy Eating Policy. *** We would ask parents not to send nuts/seeds to school as we have a number of children in various classes who have an intolerance or severe allergy. It is also important to remind children not to share lunches.

  • Left-over food & packaging from lunches must be taken home for recycling, composting or disposal.

  • Parents, please adhere to public health advice by maintaining social distance & wearing appropriate face coverings at the school gates.

  • All absences must be accompanied by an explanation. Notes explaining absences should be emailed to the class email address, as we cannot use pink slips this year. (We are obliged by law to notify Tusla when a child has missed 20 days)

  • Junior Infants will continue to finish at 12:00 until Friday September 11th. Thereafter they will finish at 1:40pm.

We look forward to working with you all throughout what promises to be another busy and exciting year ahead.

Car Park Safety 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As the school has grown, the car park has become an increasingly busy place. In the interest of safety for all pupils, we would like to remind you about drop-off & collection procedures. We would, once again, appreciate the co-operation of all parties in the implementation of these protocols.

The teachers have already spoken with all children about the importance of using the footpaths & of remaining vigilant at all times when entering or leaving the school. The message has been emphasised that pupils should use paths only & should NOT walk through the car park or behind or between cars. Teachers have explained & demonstrated these safe procedures, in order to minimise the possibility

of accidents.  Everybody has a role to play in maintaining safety in the car park & school environs.

Teachers are expected to:

  • Explain correct procedures & regularly remind pupils of same.

  • Ensure the children know they should use the paths only & not parking areas

  • See the children safely off the school premises

  • Release pupils to designated collection persons, when identified (Junior Infants – 2nd Class)

Pupils are expected to:

  • Use footpaths only & never walk behind or between cars (parked or moving)

  • Inform their teacher when they have identified collection person (Junior Infants – 2nd Class)

  • Use the pedestrian crossing if crossing the road

  • Follow all safety guidelines (including mounting & dismounting buses)

Parents/Guardians/Collectors are expected to:

  • Deposit & collect children in a timely & safe manner

  • Use the designated collection areas at dispersal time i.e. Yellow boxes at Gates 1 & 2

  • Use the pedestrian crossing if crossing the road

  • Ensure pupils use paths at all times & do not walk behind or between cars

  • Keep the pedestrian crossing, bus parking spaces, & the Church grounds free at all times

  • Be considerate of our neighbours by not blocking driveways, gates or entrances

  • Ensure the school has up to date contact details, including designated collection persons & inform the school in writing if these details change

Please use (& encourage your children to use) the pedestrian crossing at all times while crossing the road.

We would continue to encourage as many pupils as possible to walk, cycle, scoot, or travel by bus, for environmental as well as health reasons.

We are confident that, with the co-operation of all concerned, the car park will be a safer place for all who use it & we thank you all for your continued efforts in this regard.
